WORKDAY

There will be a workday at 4305 Austin Phillip Lane, Bartow.  Meet at 9:30, start at 10.

David reported we have lost the right to put the bees at Upper Tampa Bay Park. There are new people in county government whose purpose appears to be money driven. County attorney said it is unfair for one organization to have the right when others don’t have a chance. They will award the right to the highest bidder. Our friend Brian who lives on premises has spoken to Bert and explained his hands are tied although he hates to see us go. David, as apiary head, would like to find  a  spot nearer to the extension office. When storms are a threat, the bees have to be moved this way anyway. He asked if anyone knows of any leads as to where we might find a place here please let him know. There is an abundance of brazilian pepper in this area which would be good for our honey production also. It was suggested to contact Swiftmud.

Dennis appealed for help with the party. It is the highlight and culmination of our year and a big production. Much help is needed so please see  him after the meeting  to volunteer.

Dennis asked that we  have  another election as he feels we did not follow the by-laws.  After extended discussion regarding whether we did or not, a motion was made that the board will decide how to solve the problem and report at the next meeting. More discussion ensued. Several people volunteered for nominating committee.  Decided to hold another election at the November meeting. Call any nominations to James Crauswell.

Update: The following week, Dennis withdrew his name and the elected officers will serve their term.

Kevin  Smith brought up the $1,000 cd donated in memory of Lottie Tedman. He feels more recognition should be given to it.  He will get a plaque made for display so we will have a reminder.

Gene did not fulfill the requirements that would make him a lifetime member according to our by-laws.

Introduction of Officers

SPEAKER

Held up at hospital.

Johnny spoke about the workday this Saturday. Brian to mow the bee yard and it looks great. Work hives. Put 22 supers on last time as they are making honey.

A question and answer period took place.

OLD BUSINESS

David Smith made a motion we re-queen. Much discussion took place regarding the need to and the time we have done it in the past. It was pointed out that Miksa, who we order the queens from, has always ended up donating them to us. However, we usually order before now. Can we get them this late? The motion was then voted on. Seconded and passed. Johnny will order queens for insertion in four weeks.

Discussion then took place regarding the bees being treated for mites. Jan Allen asked when they had been treated last. Johnny said last December. Most  agreed they are overdue. David Smith gave his opinion which was if we do not treat, our numbers will drop markedly. It  was agreed that  they would be treated with the first of three applications at the workday this coming Saturday.

Wayne Earhart, our Board of Managers representative, reminded we need to decide  what we are going to do with the free pass to the  State Convention. A raffle was suggested. Several people were interested.

TREASURERS REPORT

Motion to accept July treasurers report. Seconded and passed. Gene Petys asked why the $1,000 cd in memory of Lottie Tedman was never mentioned anymore. Jan admitted she just forgets to put it on and will from now on make sure it is included. It has renewed.

Introduction of Officers

SPEAKER

Did not show.

Wayne, our BOM representative gave his report:

The Bee Lab Project was vetoed by the Governor during the last Legislature. It will be back on the slate this session but possibly in a modified version as the prime reason the Governor did not pass it was he felt that there was not enough revenue coming back into the State to off set the expenditure. Had he read the feasibility study that was done by Tax Watch (which was paid for by many of our Associations generosity in donations to the tune of $25,000.00), he would have seen many more millions of dollars in income would more than off set the 3.5 million in construction cost. FSBA will double it’s efforts in getting this all important piece of Legislature passed.

The second item, is that, in addition to a $ 10.00 per registration rebate coming back to each Association for a member attending the FSBA Convention in October, there will also be a Scholarship awarded to each Association for a paid attendance to the Convention (a $180.00 value). This may be used in any way the membership at large sees fit to assign it…as an award, grant, prize, donation, or raffle.

OLD BUSINESS

TREASURERS REPORT

Motion to accept treasurers report. Seconded and passed.

MINUTES

Motion made to accept  June minutes.  Seconded and passed.

Jan reported on meeting with Don Baehr who is preparing the 501c3. He has obtained information  from the IRS which indicates we actually had 501c3 status. However, in 2009, 2010 and 2011, no one filed a return and after three years of not filing, your non profit status is revoked. It must be re-applied for.

Jan has arranged for Mr Baehr to be our speaker at next month’s meeting. He will explain exactly what our responsibilities are as a non profit 501c3. Formulate any questions you might have.

Discussion ensued regarding the Gene Petys honorary membership voted on last  month. Bylaws state clearly the list of  items that need to be  donated to the association apiary, not to the raffle of the seminar, in order to obtain lifetime status. Jan pointed out the fact that many members give of their time and have for years. Also similar donations. Gene as well as all others should be given a round of applause and thanked for their generosity. That is all. Jimmy Johnson  made motion  to dismiss.  Rebecca Conroy brought up more discussion. David Smith asked Gene if he wanted to donate a  hive of bees to become a lifetime member since as an honorary member, he would not have voting privileges. He said, and I quote, ”Not  really. I’ve donated so many over the years  it  doesn’t really matter.” When no one could agree, Johnny simply moved on.

SPEAKER

Our speaker was Ray Latner from Dadant. He spoke about pests and diseases. Said

Verroa mites are still the #1 problem for us. Apistan becoming resistant to it. Best to

rotate to prevent resistance. Apivar will work slower. Wait 5 to 6 weeks to check results.

Powdered sugar just a mechanical way to get the mites off the bees. American foul

brood is a bacterial infection. Tylane is an antibiotic treatment.

Johnny Walker announced workday this Saturday at Upper Tampa Bay Park at 9:30.

Will be treating for mites. Next couple months will be extracting and also re-queening.

Wear appropriate clothing.

OLD BUSINESS

David brought to our attention the fact that you do not have to be a member of the state

beekeeping association. It is a choice. Registering your bees with the state does not get

you a membership in the state association. That is a different process entirely.

Russ said Keith Council, state president, has had around 600 hives stolen, some of them

are state association hives. Police are refusing to file a report.

TREASURERS REPORT

Jan read report in Pat’s absence. She also read the report on the profit made on the 2013

Seminar which was nearly $1,300. See attached reports. David asked Tom Troiani if

there was anything he would like to add. He thanked Mike Drankwalter for the

fabulous job he did with the lunch as that was the key reason we were able to save

money and make the handsome profit. He then asked if the association would vote to

pay $100 to the person filling in for the apitherapist that did not come from Miami.

David pointed out to him that the association board had already voted on that as Tom

had insisted before the seminar and it was a done deal. The discussion became heated

between the two and James Crauswell intervened and quieted everyone down.

Someone suggested tabling this. Jan then pointed out to everyone that this had been an

issue before the seminar and that never had any of the speakers been paid. This wasn’t

something that was just now popping up. The majority of the Board’s views on this was

that if one was paid, all speakers should be paid. And at Tom’s request, this was voted

on two or three weeks prior. Motion was then made to accept the treasurer’s report as

SPEAKER

Our speakers were Jimmy Johnson and Johnny Walker. They spoke on

types of bee removals. Swarms, trap outs and cutouts. They both got into

beekeeping because of feral bees. For a swarm, sugar water them down,

smoke them, until you know how aggressive they are. A frame of brood in

the hive body helps get them going in.

Cut out: Infrared gun is helpful locating brood chamber as it detects the

higher temperature. Even works in block walls. Suit up and let neighbors

know what you are doing . Expose hive in wall if you can. Remove brood

comb and put in catch frames. Pieces of comb with eggs and brood. Couple

catch frames help start a new hive. Then take out comb with honey. As it

establishes, put brood to the outside. They then demonstrated how to use a

bee vac.

Trap Out: Drawback to this method is time. Make a cone out of screen

allowing bees to come out but not get back in. Attach to wall and seal.

Make sure there is a good frame of brood in their new home that contains

stick eggs. Put it right right next to the cone.

We were reminded to check the state website for information on upcoming

legislation regarding beekeepers possibly being licensed to do bee

removals.

Bert Kelly gave details of the upcoming State Fair and the State Bee

Association booth there. He needs volunteers to man the booth as the fair

runs from 2/7- 2/18. Please contact him to volunteer.

>Dinner

>Our speaker was David Westervelt, FDACS. He oversees all apiary inspection in the

state. He touched on several subjects including how to protect our hives from pesticides

during pollination. He suggested visiting floridabeeprotection.org, a website with the

division of agriculture and environmental sciences. It is a wealth of information that

would benefit beekeepers regarding this subject. He reiterated that the best way of

course to protect your bees is to stay in contact with he grove owners and keep open

communication at all times.

!

He also spoke about the new law passed this year regarding the right to keep backyard

bees. The right to farm act. It really has not been challenged as of yet. It preempts any

town or county ordinance. It does not, however, preempt a homeowners association

that states no bees.

If you are challenged in any way, do not hesitate to contact the state attorneys as they

will back you, as long as you are a registered beekeeper.

He reminded everyone be patient with inspections as thy are swamped. Where there

use to be around 900 hives that needed inspecting, there are now 2800.

Possibility of master beekeepers doing some of the inspections or perhaps self

inspecting has been suggested.

Subject of bee removals now being against the law came up. When details are worked

out, beekeepers that do removals will be required to have a special certificate after

taking a class and to carry liability insurance and have a business license. This must all

pass the legislature and probably be enacted next summer.
