The Tampa Bay Beekeepers Association monthly meeting came to order on Thursday, March 8, 2008 at 7:35 pm at the Hillsborough County Extension Office new meeting hall. President Jim Alderman presided. Guests included Sue and John Vandiver, Jason Aiken and Dawn Allison, David Arters, and Len Osborne (IL).  Approximate number of attendees: 43.  Steve Gemesi provided the refreshments.   Door prizes provided by Bert Kelly.

Treasurer’s report: balance is $4,184.97 in the checking account with. Treasurer’s report and January minutes were accepted with some corrections.

Since no guest speakers were able to come to meeting, Jim described the role of the TBBA for the new members and guests.

Jim needs someone with a truck to haul 100 supers to the park. Contact Jim if you can help pick up the supers.

Club members asked who has lost bees in group due to the disappearing bees phenomenon (CCD). Other bee problems such as mites and bull ants were discussed. Permetherin is effective against ants. The Bengal powder (found at the True Value Hardware) is effective for small hive beetles.

Master beekeeper training certification is coming soon and will be presented at a future club meeting.

A question was brought up on how much time to wait to bring back bees after greening spray.  Wait 6 weeks? Growers in Polk, Hardee, Hillsborough counties are spraying. Greening is a disease spread by an insect that kills trees.  Chemical used for spraying is up taken by the plant and distributed throughout its fluids. This chemical is highly toxic to bees.

Bee seminar: Secretary will send copies of the flyer to Jerry Latner at Dadant, and County extension offices. Rebecca Conroy will contact newspapers to announce the seminar.  Dawn Allison agreed to contact the Tampa Tribune. Jane will contact Polk Co libraries, extension offices, and garden clubs.  Jim has a contact for signs.

Old Business: Non profit organization papers:  FL Dept of State - Annual Report Notices. The Board of Directors includes Bill Roberts, Mike Godwin, J. Alderman, and Dwight Aman.  Submit by May 1 – a $61.45 fee. Board of Directors legal responsibilities was discussed. Existing Board of Directors will stand.

New Business

Treasurer will file an expense report with the State of Florida required of all corporations and non-profits.

Beekeeping Seminar Saturday, May 19th. Jim A. confirmed the availability of a pavilion at the park and the upstairs room at the park visitor’s center.  Volunteer coordinators are Charlie and Annemarie Hammond.  The seminar is advertised in state paper. Guest speakers include L. Cuts, and Jerry Hayes. Fee charge is $20.00 advance or $25.00 day of seminar.  Seminar includes lunch and donuts.  Participants will need to sign a waiver to participate. Station demos were assigned to the following people:

 Package bees – Noel Blanchet
 Dave Miksa – Queen bees
 John Stonehouse – Hive/frame assembly
 Jim Alderman – Bee pests and diseases
 Cliff Bibbs – Wax Rendering
 Dwight Aman – Honey Extraction
 Bill Roberts – Moving bee hives
 Cutts/Hayes – Advanced Beekeeping

Rob Messineo announced Apitherapy Society Seminar presented by Doctors and PhD’s in Raleigh/Durhan, NC. This medically-oriented seminar addresses all the therapeutic and healing properties of the hive for major diseases. The seminar is April 26-29, 2007 and cost is $225. Guest speaker from the Apitherapy Society is available for TBBA club meetings. For more information please see www.apitherapy.org.

Bert Kelly announced the State Fair honey sales were very successful -- about $4,000 profit made.  Thanks to everyone for their help at the Fair.

Polk County Agri-fest for fourth graders: 9a.m. – 12:30 in April 9 – 13th and also the following week.  Bert wants helpers and volunteers to talk about bees. Contact Bert Kelley if you are interested in participating in this event.

State Association is looking at Polk County to host the winter meeting.  Spring meeting is to be held in Green Cove Springs.

Guest speaker is Keith Council who will discuss Africanized Bees in Sarasota.
